Magnolia High School senior, Baker Allhands, was recently awarded the 2024 Shelter Insurance Foundation Agents Scholarship. This program annually awards scholarships to graduating high school seniors in communities with a Shelter Mutual Insurance Company agent participating in the program. The highlights of the program are:
$1,500 scholarships that are awarded annually to graduating seniors who attend high schools that are approved and accredited by that state's Departments of Education.
The scholarship is paid directly to any accredited college, university, or trade school in which the scholarship recipient has enrolled, by the September following their high school graduation and is applied toward tuition, fees, books, and on-campus housing charges.
A local selection committee of three to five people consisting of high school officials and leaders of the business and/or professional community considers the applicants' scholastic achievement, participation and leadership in school and community activities, citizenship, moral character, educational goals, and financial need.
Scholarships are given without regard to race, color, religion, sex, pregnancy, national origin or ancestry, physical or mental disability, veteran status, genetic information or any other classification protected by federal, state or local law. Children of any Shelter Insurance® Agent or employee are not eligible recipients of these scholarships.

BRODIE GOODWIN AND JOSEPH LEWIS WILL REPRESENT MHS AT BOYS STATE
Magnolia High School juniors, Brodie Goodwin and Joseph Lewis were nominated to represent their community and school at Arkansas Boys State 2024, an immersive leadership and civic engagement experience sponsored by the American Legion. The local sponsor for Brodie Goodwin is Farmers Bank & Trust Co. and Joseph Lewis is sponsored locally by Peoples Bank.
They will join more than 565 young men from 190 high schools attending the program's 83rd session at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway from May 26-31. The program's 2024 enrollment marks its largest class of young men in seven years.
"Arkansas Boys State is a legacy program that has produced remarkable local, state, national and international leaders," said Lloyd Jackson, executive director of Arkansas Boys State.
During their week at Arkansas Boys State, Goodwin and Lewis will be assigned a political party, city, and county. They will administer, from the ground up, a mock government as if it were real: run for office, draft and pass legislation, solve municipal challenges and engage constituents.
"This year's remarkable growth speaks to how this program is playing a life-changing role in the lives of the young men who join us year after year," said Jackson. "We're thrilled that they are joining us and will experience this once-in-a-lifetime leadership opportunity in just a few weeks."
The week's activities, including keynote speakers, general assemblies, and election speeches, will be streamed live by Arkansas PBS on their Arkansas Citizens Access Network: https://www.myarkansaspbs.org/arcan.
